Why supercapacitors are ideal for the smart grid market

Introduction
In a rapidly expanding market, the world has turned to renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind power, to meet ever growing demands. As such, the market for energy storage technology has likewise risen, and supercapacitors are here to play a significant role in helping to level power load and reduce strain on the grid, with the capability to deliver peak power while extending the lifespan of batteries. Supercapacitors also provide backup power for wind pitch control systems and uninterrupted power systems (UPS), and contribute further with short-term bridging and peak-shavings power applications.

Wind Energy
Wind turbine pitch control systems are used to change the angle of rotor blades based on wind speed and direction, adjusting output power, reaching higher efficiency, and providing protection for rotor blades during suboptimal wind speeds. By drawing power from supercapacitors, these pitch control systems allow for more reliable and safer operations on wind turbines.

Stability
Grid stability has always been a huge obstacle, as intermittent renewable energy sources make up a large, and growing, proportion of the energy mix. In this field, supercapacitors beat out batteries in that they are more ideal for performing fast functions, such as frequency response, while also shifting peak power demand and storing large quantities of energy.

UPS (Uninteruppted Power Systems)
With the increase in telecoms and data centres rapidly growing, the necessity for reduced interruptions in energy supply has become all the more crucial. Supercapacitors, with their long lifetime and reliability, fill in the requirements for UPS perfectly.

Power Quality Systems
Issues such as voltage sags and swells, voltage flicker, and power interruptions result in frequent malfunctions, and can render machines unusable. Supercapacitor modules work to alleviate this issue by and systems by providing high power quality for data centers, production facilities, and other applications where said issues need to be avoided if possible.

-  Reliability becomes ever crucial in remote and challenging settings
Ultracapacitors fill this role perfectly with their                           ability to perform under extreme temperatures, little               to no maintenance requirements, and long lifetimes.

Why supercapacitors are ideal for the smart grid market

-  More efficient fixes to power disturbances
99% of all power disturbances occur quickly, often                     lasting less than 10 seconds. As such, supercapacitors               are capable of handling these interruptions more                      quickly and efficiently than typical batteries and                        flywheels.
